What’s in a Name?

Introducing Aspen Grove

Last month we started receiving color samples from Caledonian Dyeworks, who will be handling all of our custom Tempestry yarn dyeing, and we are so excited! It’s time to start finalizing our new colorway names, and part of this process has been taking in lots and lots of name suggestions and ideas from lots of Tempestry folks.

For each color, we’re narrowing names down to two or three suggestions and then posting to the FB group or other Tempestry / fiber circles to help us settle on the final name.

Pictured below is the very first sample we received, formerly Semolina in KnitPicks parlance. We narrowed down the possible new names to Aspen Gold and Scotch Broom and then put it to the group. It’s always fascinating to see how different people read color differently (Aspen is a clearer yellow! Scotch Broom is a brighter yellow! No, the opposite! and so on), but what we really appreciated was the discussion about how Scotch Broom is an invasive species in some parts of the world (including our own part of the world), and how many people seem to have an emotional connection to Aspen trees.

So, we are delighted to introduce the first of 38 custom Tempestry yarn colors: Aspen Grove, available for pre-order here, along with several other colors (and more coming soon)!
